The latest version of You Control is 1.7 and was released on July 21, 2008.
You can view the latest release notes here.
Note: If you would like to run You Control on 10.3.9, you can install version 1.3.3.
Unlike a collection of disparate utilities each with its own user interface and intricacies pulled together from different developers, You Control menu modules have a consistent user interface and predicable behavior that cuts the learning curve. Instead of launching multiple programs to use separate menu utilities, You Control uses a single efficient engine that reduces computing overhead requirements.
If you have downloaded You Control, simply mount the disk image by double-clicking on the .dmg file. Next, drag You Control to the location of your choice (we recommend your Applications folder) along with the accompanying documentation.
To uninstall You Control, first quit the application if you have not already done so. You can quit the application by ctrl-clicking on a You Control menu and selecting "Stop Engine." Then you should drag the application (generally stored in your Applications folder) to the trash.
You can assign Hot Keys to any of the following You Control features:
To create a hot key combination for a You Control feature, simply place your mouse cursor over the menu selection and type the desired key combination.
To remove a hot key combination for a feature, place your cursor over the menu selection and press the delete key.
Select the menu in the Menus area of the You Control configuration window. From the Settings tab for the selected menu, click the "Set Hot Key..." button. Enter the desired key command when prompted by the pop-up window, then click "OK."
Select the menu in the Menus area of the You Control configuration window. From the Settings tab for the selected menu, click the "Set Hot Key..." button. In the resulting pop-up window, choose "Set to None" and then click "OK."
You Control custom menus are active globally regardless of what application you may be currently working in. This means any Hot Keys you have established in You Control will override those of other applications. Choose your keyboard shortcuts for your Hot Keys carefully. For a complete list of Apple specific command keys please see Apple's Mac OS X: Keyboard Shortcuts page.
Yes, so be very careful how you use this module. We recommend that you use this module only if you are a "Power User" and have a thorough understanding of Mac OS X, UNIX and the effects and consequences of stopping Mac OS X processes.
No! The You Control Address module and Calendar module do not require to be running either Address Book or iCal respectively in order to view your information.
You Control's iTunes module will display your iTunes library including Artists, Album, Song Title, Genre, etc. even if iTunes is not running. Of course, if you find a song you want to hear, you can always have You Control start playing it for you - which will then, of course, launch iTunes to play the song.
Either before or after turning on the You Control Clock module, we recommend that you turn the Mac OS X clock from being displayed in the menu bar. To do this, go to your System Preferences, then go to the Date and Time settings and uncheck the box to Show date and time.
The following You Control modules require a connection to the Internet.
These modules will work without an Internet connection, but require one in order to get the most recent information and updates.
The You Control Recents module displays the same information as the Apple Recent Items list. However, the benefits of the You Control Recents module is that you can choose to display just Recent Applications or just Recent Documents. Additionally, you can configure the You Control Recents module to give you a Recents menu anywhere you want - not just under the Apple menu.
If a You Control module is set to display its information "Inline," the information will be displayed under the main menu item. If a module is set to not display information "Inline," the information will be "nested" within a sub-menu. For example, if you have your iTunes module set to display your playlists "Inline," you will see all of your playlists listed one after the other like normal items in a menu. If you have the "Inline" option unchecked, you will see a single menu item called "Playlists" with a sub-menu that displays all of your playlists.
In You Control 1.6 and later, you can create your own controller sets. We have created a separate Creating Custom Controllers page to give you an overview.
